These paintings have been made through a pandemic, through civil unrest in my country, and now through fires ablaze all around me.
The title ‘NOBODY’S BABY’ eludes to a longing for guidance, and a need for stability and intimacy I have only been able to find within. The reach for a hand that does not exist.
‘NOBODY’S BABY’ is about independence; both forced and found. A growing into oneself when longing to grow into another. The desperation and desire for answers that do not exist. ‘NOBODY’S BABY’ is a survey and a celebration of our most primal intuition; survival.
I AM THE BABY
I AM NO LONGER THE BABY
I FOR SURE AS HELL AIN’T YOUR BABY
I AM NOBODY’S BABY
With love and resentment,
CANYON CASTATOR & CARL KOSTYAL LAUNCH CARs,
AN ARTIST IN RESIDENCE PROGRAMME AT MOHILEF STUDIOS, DOWNTOWN LOS ANGELES
The Texas-born, Los Angeles-based contemporary artist Canyon Castator & gallerist Carl Kostyál are pleased to present an invitational, not-for-profit artist in residence programme at MOHILEF STUDIOS in the Flower District in the heart of historic downtown Los Angeles.
About Mohilef Studios:
Canyon and his sculptor father, Mark Castator, run the complex, which has 25 variously sized studios. Current occupants include Austyn Weiner, Jess Valice, Camilla Engström, Booboo Stewart and Canyon himself. MOHILEF STUDIOS has quickly become a critical space for the exchange of ideas amongst these artists.
Given the enviable location, where an artist supply shop, bars and restaurants are all within walking distance, the residency offers an unusually easy experience of Los Angeles life and, most importantly, the chance to connect with the other artists in the studio complex.
The artist-in-residence programme will offer 3 residencies a year, with each lasting one month. The invited artists will be offered a studio space for the duration of the residency.
